It’s odd, how you can look at something nearly everyday and not really see it. I’ve had a framed Scottish prayer hanging in my room since I was a kid. In each corner is a heraldic beast – unicorn, lion, wyvern, and opinicus.


“Opinicus?” you might ask.

Yes, this mythical creature had thus far also been unknown to me. I haven’t been able to unearth much about it. Wikipedia briefly mentions that an opinicus is a variety of griffin with the neck and tail of a camel.

D&D has its own take on the beast – a desert-dweller that throws monkey parts into the anatomical mix.

In more recent nerd culture, Witcher 3 seems to have included an opinicus as an “archgriffin.”

It also appears to be a soap company based in Minnesota.
